It’s True. My New Bathroom Is . . . Beautiful

October 11, 2025 By Barbara Falconer Newhall

It's True. My New Bathroom Is . . . Beautiful tiled-bath-remodel
For my mid-century house on a hill, I tried to replicate the look of the 1950s tile that still exists elsewhere in our house. Thus, the six-inch square tiles in an offset pattern. Whatever its vintage, it’s true, my new bathroom is beautiful. We added a second hand-held shower near a bench at the foot of the shower. Photo by Barbara Newhall

It’s true. My new bathroom is . . . beautiful. I’ve been spending a lot of time in there lately, so I should know.

The last doorknob, towel bar and water faucet finally got installed a couple of weeks ago, and I like the results. So much so that I find myself taking a shower at the drop of a hat, whether I need one or not.

That’s partly because the new shower stall with its grab bars and grippy shower pan is so much safer than the slippery old tub-shower it replaced.

But mostly it’s because it’s so darned pretty in there.

It’s True. My New Bathroom Is Beautiful. Here’s Why:
  • The tile is lovely. Pratt + Larsen squares on the walls. Sonoma Tilemakers hexagons on the floor, with soft, but bright, colors that move from yellow to green to aqua. I love standing in my shower surrounded on all sides with all three colors reflecting off each other.
  • The grab bars make me feel safe. Two are inside the shower. But one is next to the toilet — in case I need one there some day. Meanwhile, I keep a bath mat hanging on that grab bar so I can pass it off as a towel bar.

I took my tile samples out into the sunlight to take a photo, holping to capture their true color. The result — close! Photo by Barbara Newhall
  • The toilet is tall. The 16-inch high seat makes it easier to get on and off, especially during the night when my creaky knees are at their creakiest.
  • The niche in the shower is super pretty. But I had it placed out of sight. In the real world, that niche will be jammed with unsightly bottles and jars all screaming for attention.
  • The medicine cabinet is ginormous — eight wide shelves. (OK, two of them are out of my reach and useless. But, hey, maybe that’s the right place for the kids’ old soccer trophies, which are taking up space in the guest rooms.)

This bathroom is the last of the ambitious remodel projects that I — or Jon and I — have undertaken in the last few years:  The living room and deck. The backyard. The side yard. The front yard.

Now that all these big projects are done, I’ll have more time for friends, family and the next book project — thoughts on grief.

More on friendship at “Post-Corona Virus — What Will Happen to All That Hugging We’ve Been Doing?”   And here’s one on holing up with your best friend during the pandemic, “Oh-Oh. Is Cabin Fever Setting In?”

A grab bar disguised as towel bar. I don’t need this grab bar — yet. Meanwhile, I’m passing it off as a towel bar. The carpenter added a windowsill so I can grow small plants in the window. Notice the variation in the colors of the handmade Pratt + Larson tile. Photo by Barbara Newhall

The niche in two shades of Pratt + Larsen tile is tucked away at one end of the shower stall so that when it’s filled with shampoo bottles and body scrub the clutter will be out of sight. I found grab bars in a color that blends with the tile. Photo by Barbara Newhall
