The Conversation Post Roe v. Wade
Join me in San Francisco on Tuesday, August 16, when five women, including me, reflect on their experiences with abortion in prose and poetry before, during and post Roe v. Wade. Discussion and a Q&A will following the readings.
Here’s the line-up:
Dr. Shelley Sella, a recently retired Ob-Gyn who provided abortion care, will read a piece about an aspect of third-trimester abortion.
Susan Ito, memoirist, poet and a person who was adopted, has a few things to say about “adoption, not abortion.”
Barbara Falconer Newhall, author of “Wrestling with God: Stories of Doubt and Faith” (A Seeker’s Pilgrimage through the Religions of the World), will tell a story that takes place before Roe v. Wade.
Meryl Natchez, poet, writer and author of “Catwalk,” will read a piece about how abortion changed the trajectory of her life.
Leah Korican, visual artist and writer, will address her complex family history with abortion.
For those of you who can’t be there, you can read my piece at “Unmarried and (Probably) Pregnant in Mid-Century America.”

Hi, Are you by any chance related to the late Virginia Drugg of Seattle? She was a granddaughter of well-known Alaskan missionaries Albert and Agnes Newhall (c. 1900). I am trying to locate Virginia heirs to discuss historical matters. Many thanks & sorry to bother you. Your blog looks terrific! Ray Hudson, Middlebury VT

My husband’s Newhall ancestors came from Saugus, Massachusetts. It’s very possible there is a distant link between your family and his — going back beyond Albert and Agnes. Let me know if you come across any intriguing Newhall stories. Genealogy is a fascinating topic. I’m big fan of TV shows like “Finding Your Roots” and “Who Do You Think You Are?”
