I’m 79, going on 80, and this is my 600th blog post.
The numbers are adding up.
Eight decades on this planet.
And six hundred essays published. Some big, some small. Some ambitious, some forgettable.
I started posting on this website way back in 2009, starting out with a post about my son Peter, “How Selective Service Made a Man of My Son — Without Even Trying.”
And I’ve kept up a steady pace ever since — averaging one post a week for twelve years.
This blog has been my companion through the death of my mother, aunt and husband. Also, the weddings of two children, the births of two grandchildren, a major house remodel, and the publication of my first book. Also one scary pandemic.
As a result — there’s a lot of good stuff to read here. I invite you to spend a few hours with me — as you might spend time reading a book, and I’ll do my best to be good company.
Just click on a topic below and see what comes up. My daughter? My son? My husband? The weeds in my garden? Women’s issues? Pop culture? The great outdoors? God?
A Case of the Human Condition
I’ve got an incurable Case of the Human Condition. And since you do too, I’m counting on you to laugh and cry along with me as I riff on life as we know it . . . In this category, you’ll read about my creaky old fifties house, my forays into home gardening, my shopping stories, my spectacularly low-fashion wardrobe and more.
My Ever-Changing Family
Our family shrinks and grows. People die. People get born. People get mad and won’t talk to you for a while. Kids grow up and find partners of their own, and pretty soon there are brand-new in-laws. And a grandchild or two.
My Rocky Spiritual Journey
You don’t have to be a big believer to find something interesting to read here. You’ll find excerpts from the spiritual journeys of people I’ve met on the religion beat as well as reports of my own fraught encounters with religion and spirituality. Also, updates on my book, “Wrestling with God: Stories of Doubt and Faith,” from Patheos Press.

The Sheltering at Home Chronicles
Fourteen months of dodging the coronavirus — and meeting up with fluffy, out-of-control hair, my long-forgotten kegels, and covid arm.
Yes, I’ve got 79 years and my 600th blog post under my belt. But it’s pretty sad around here without Jon to talk me down from my anxieties or throw me a crossword puzzle clue as I empty the dishwasher.
I’ll keep on going with the writing, the gardening, the parenting and the grandparenting. That’s what I’ll do.
I’ll keep on going. And sometimes it will be fun.
Lindsey says
Excellent work on this accomplishment! I really love your writing style and am looking forward to your next book.
Barbara Falconer Newhall says
Jon is the hero of the next book. You’ll see.
Jean MacGillis says
Good to see you doing so well, facing life with a positive attitude. We have to push on through life challenges because there is no other choice.
Barbara Falconer Newhall says
Right. Gotta keep going. What else can you do?
Sue Watson says
I’m smiling because I wonder if you did one on ”A nosebleed in Las Vegas”? Just kidding! I think of you often. Take care.
Barbara Falconer Newhall says
Sue. Right! I had a weird and embarrassingly persistent nosebleed in the dry Nevada air during a reunion with college friends. I share a lot in my writing, but not everything. I still have the inhibitions of a middle class, mid-century Midwesterner. Not everything goes public.
Ann Teixeira says
Yes, there will still be fun! Congratulations on your 600th post!! I’m so glad you’ve kept them them going throughout the pandemic and Jon’s untimely death — I look forward to each one.
Barbara Falconer Newhall says
It looks like I’m going to be writing, no matter what’s happening to me.
Ann Teixeira says
It’s deep within you, like cooking is for me. It’s therapy, it’s self-affirming, it’s absorbs your attention, it’s giving of yourself even when we’re in pain.
Barbara Falconer Newhall says
Cooking. That’s a good one. A really nice way to give.
